Women's group launches rights initiative to tackle gender-based violence
In a bid to tackle the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria, Baobab for Women's Human Rights (BAOBAB) has launched a groundbreaking initiative, "Redefining Masculinity: Boys as Champions of Change to End Gender-Based Violence".
The program which is being supported by African Women's Development Fund (AWDF), aims to engage teenage boys in the fight against GBV and promote positive masculinity across the country.
Speaking at the launch event in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, BAOBAB Executive Director, Yeye Bunmi Dipo-Salami, emphasized the need to challenge traditional notions of masculinity and empower young men to become allies in the fight against GBV.
"Our goal is to create a future where boys and men are not only aware of the harm caused by GBV, but are also equipped to challenge and change the norms that perpetuate it," she said.
The program, which will be replicated in all 36 states of the Federation, targets 100 boys and 20 male teachers from 10 secondary schools in each state.
Through interactive sessions and discussions, participants are driven to explore the impact of GBV and develop practical skills to become agents of change.
The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the fight against GBV in Nigeria, contributing to reduced incidence of GBV, increased reporting and response to GBV cases, improved attitudes and behaviors towards women and girls, and enhanced community engagement and activism against GBV.
"We believe that by engaging teenage boys and promoting positive masculinity, we can create a generation of men who are empathetic, respectful, and committed to gender equality," Yeye Dipo-Salami said.
She reiterated: "Our vision is a Nigeria where every woman's voice is heard, every girl's potential is unleashed, and the rights of all are fully realized."
Among the schools present are: Harding Model School, Ado Ekiti, Anglican High School, Ado Ekiti, Eyemote Comprehensive High School, Iyin Ekiti, Deji Fasuan Model College, Ado Ekiti, Corpus Christi College, Ilawe Ekiti, Ifaki Grammar School, Ifaki Ekiti , Funminiyi Adiye Model College, among others.
The program is part of BAOBAB's broader efforts to promote human rights and gender equality in Nigeria.
The organization has been at the forefront of advocating for women's rights and empowering communities to demand for their rights.
