In light of recent developments in Ogun State concerning the proposed demolition of properties linked to Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the Diaspora arm of the Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups (COSEG) wishes to express its deep concern and unwavering commitment to justice, due process, and the preservation of democratic values.
We are closely monitoring the situation and stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Nigeria who have rightly raised alarms over what appears to be a politically charged action, executed with undue haste and questionable procedural integrity.
A Call for Prudence and Dialogue
While we recognize the authority of the Ogun State Government to enforce urban regulations, we urge Governor Dapo Abiodun to exercise restraint and uphold the principles of fairness and transparency. The speed and manner in which the demolition notices were issued without adequate time for response raise troubling questions about intent and legality.
Political leadership must rise above personal grievances. The Yoruba ethos teaches us that power is transient, and legacy is shaped not by dominance but by wisdom, compassion, and justice.
Appeal for Statesmanship
We call on both parties, Governor Abiodun and Senator Daniel, to embrace dialogue over confrontation. The strength of any democracy lies not in the suppression of dissent but in the ability of leaders to resolve differences through respectful engagement.
COSEG Diaspora remains committed to facilitating peaceful mediation efforts. We are in active consultation with respected Yoruba elders and stakeholders across the UK and Ireland to support a resolution that honours the dignity of all involved.
Our Role Abroad
As custodians of Yoruba heritage in the Diaspora, we are not mere observers. We are stakeholders in the future of our homeland. We will continue to advocate for justice, unity, and responsible governance—values that transcend borders and bind us to our roots.
Let this moment be a turning point not for division but for reflection, reconciliation, and renewed commitment to the ideals that define us as a people.
Signed:
Khord Oredolapo Ibrahim
