20 Years After Beko: CDHR calls for renewed commitment to human rights activism
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has called for a renewed commitment to human rights activism in the country .
The advocacy came on the heels of the 20th memorial of Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, a renowned human rights activist and medical doctor who dedicated his life to the defence of human rights in Nigeria.
Speaking at the memorial event held at the Rights House, Lagos Tuesday, CDHR President Debo Adeniran emphasized the need for courage and vigilance in the face of current security challenges and economic hardship.
Adeniran stressed that the best way to honour Ransome-Kuti's legacy is through action, citing his unwavering commitment to human rights activism despite facing imprisonment, harassment, and other forms of persecution.
"The best way to honour Beko Ransome-Kuti is not through speeches alone. It is through action. It is through courage in the courtroom, vigilance in the streets, advocacy in the media, and integrity in our personal conduct," Adeniran said.
He also urged civil society to remain independent, principled, and united in the face of injustice, echoing Ransome-Kuti's ideals of promoting human rights and accountability.
Adeniran emphasized that insecurity, whether from banditry, terrorism, or state excesses, is fundamentally a failure of governance and that corruption is a human rights violation that steals dignity and opportunity from the people.
The memorial event was attended by comrades in the struggle, members of the Ransome-Kuti family, and other dignitaries.
Ransome-Kuti's contributions to the emergence and growth of civil society in Nigeria were celebrated, with Adeniran noting that he helped institutionalize the struggle for civil liberties in Nigeria through his leadership in organizations such as the Nigeria Medical Association and CDHR.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with human rights challenges, Adeniran's call for renewed commitment to human rights activism serves as a reminder of the importance of collective action in promoting justice and accountability
