Fubara Reaffirms Commitment to Peace, Unity as Rivers Marks 59th Anniversary

Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, unity, security and inclusive development as the state celebrates its 59th anniversary.

In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday to commemorate the anniversary, the governor said despite challenges encountered over the years, the people of Rivers State have continued to demonstrate resilience, strength and unity that have sustained the state since its creation.

Fubara described the bond of brotherhood among the various ethnic nationalities in the state, including the Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche, Ekpeye, Andoni and Kalabari, as one of the state’s greatest assets and a strong foundation for peace, stability and progress.

The governor noted that Rivers State has remained a major driver of Nigeria’s economy, owing not only to its rich oil and gas resources but also to the contributions of its people in sectors such as academia, jurisprudence, business, entertainment, public service and sports.

He assured residents that his administration would continue to pursue policies and programmes aimed at promoting peace, protecting lives and property, and expanding development across all parts of the state.

According to him, governance must remain people-centred and impactful, with equal attention given to every local government area.

Fubara also paid tribute to the founding fathers and elders of the state for preserving the spirit of unity and coexistence, while urging youths to remain hopeful, responsible and committed to building a greater Rivers State through hard work, innovation and patriotism.

The governor further acknowledged the role of women in strengthening families and communities, describing them as indispensable partners in the continued growth and stability of the state.

He called on Rivers people to use the anniversary as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, dialogue and collective progress.

“The unity and future of Rivers State must always rise above personal interests and political differences,” he stated.

Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, by the administration of Yakubu Gowon following the creation of 12 states from Nigeria’s former regions, with Rivers carved out of the defunct Eastern Region.
